New regulations mean that COVID vaccinations are now a condition of deployment for staff in CQC registered care homes. As of 11th November, anyone entering a care home (including visiting professionals) must be vaccinated.
If staff are unwilling to take up the vaccine, they will face dismissal from their role. As a result, adult social care providers – who already faced significant staffing issues pre-pandemic – are now expected to see even harsher shortages.
We are not talking in insignificant numbers here; a recent survey revealed that 62 per cent of care home staff believed colleagues would have to leave their role because they’re against having the vaccine.[1] This would leave the industry with a grossly inadequate number of skilled workers to support vulnerable people.
It was announced last week that all frontline health and social care staff must also be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by 1st April 2022 – this means that both NHS and private dentists, dental nurses and patient-facing administrative staff within dental practices will now be required to take up the vaccine. Professionals who don’t see patients face-to-face will be exempt from these rules.
Like in the care sector, the implementation of compulsory vaccinations will perpetuate an already existing recruitment and retention crisis amongst Health and Social Care Workers. It’s getting harder to attract new applicants and to keep the staff you already have.
